Picking Out a Skincare Regimen
Before anything, I just want to say that I am taking part of the September challenge! If you haven't seen it yet, you can check it out, hurr.
Anyway, I'm playing it up my way as well.
- Starting tomorrow, September 9, 2010 until October 9, 2010, I will eliminate sweets (pastries, candy, etc.) EXCEPT for dark chocolate. Justification? Good antioxidant, and if I don't have that at least, I'll feel deprived, I'd binge and fail.
- If I could avoid dark chocolate, I'd go for fruits or yogurt :D
- Sodium issue? I will stay off of chips (goodbye Cheetos =\) and quick cook pancit canton, to see how effective that move would be :p
That's it for now, hope it'll prove effective.
Now onto my main agenda.
Over a week ago, I've finally changed up my skincare regimen. Why? I wanted to try new things and really target my problem areas. And you know what? I'm quite pleased with it so far. So I thought it'd be nice to share some tips for those starting out, or to debunk "myths" and misconceptions, and whatnot.
- Know what you need - in my case, I'm pretty much okay with skin. My problem? Under eye, specifically fine lines. Cause? I've been a little rough with my skin there and now I'm paying for my wrongdoings :p
- Know how much is reasonable to shell out - I'm a student. I don't have a steady job, I cannot, and I repeat I CANNOT afford to buy top brand skincare products. I can try to get quality products for a good price, but other than that, nope, sorry.
- Get your money's worth and use it where you need it - let's face it, skincare doesn't really come cheap if you want results. It's an investment and I think it's better to not need makeup, you know? But you're in luck because you don't have to spend a ton on each product. With me, I chose a decent facial wash, nothing too expensive, chose a cream that could be used for AM and PM (so I don't have to buy a separate one for morning and night) and I sort of "splurged" on the eye cream, if it's even really splurging at all.
Here's what I have based on the three things above [taken from my blog]:
My take? Though my skincare regimen is priced at 2,122.85php I believe it's still pretty reasonable for what you get. I've been into a week at it so far and I must say, I've been liking it a little more than I did with what I was doing before. Your skin is worth it. If it's cheap and it doesn't work, it's no good, you're wasting your money. That's what I've learned after many attempts to save a few bucks. So yes, there it is. I hope this helps :) Naturally, you want to get products catering to your skin type, and all that jazz, so we're set, right? RIGHT!

LIFE BEFORE AND MY GOAL FOR NOW
Before Mara and I jump into giving advices on what and what not to do when it comes to losing weight, we will take you guys back on what are lives were before we were this determined in losing weight.
I've said this before, I was always the fat kid. I am only 5 flat and a quarter so I should be at least 110 lbs and way back, I think my heaviest was around 140 lbs. I am gonna be completely honest here, a lot of things happened in my life from the time I was 140 lbs up to this very moment and I weigh MORE than that now and I am not overstating it.
I think one of the reasons why I can't stick to my diet is because there's always food in our house, my dad cooks a lot of good irresistible food plus my lack of self discipline. Sure I can always blame people around me but it still boils down to my lack of self discipline and limit. I can't blame all the people who love and care for me because they are always here for me supporting. The problem WAS me.
WAS ME!
THAT WAS MY LIFE BEFORE!
I am taking baby steps right now and starting to discipline myself, set goals and FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS. It isn't about trying to fit in a pair of skinny jeans but to be disease and complications free.
as for my goals:
Share it to us! We would like to know ;) Inspire us!
That's it for me for tonight and I will see you guys around.
love lots,
Em

as for my goals:
- Learn how to eat right
- count my calories for every meal
- stay away from carbs and starch as much as possible
- avoid eating out
- lose at least 2 pounds every week (according to research people who are overweight like me can lose up to 4 lbs a week). or 8-10 lbs/month
- EXERCISE!! I was once had an active lifestyle and I should get back to it (a lil fact: I was watching the Doctors a week ago and according to them, walking for at least 11 minutes a day can drop your chance by 80% of having breast cancer?) LET'S BE ALL BE HEALTHY and let's get our muscles toned!

Reality Check: Starting Again
Hey guys, I'm back. Just got a wakeup call today and thought that if I'm going to be real and honest, rather than just spewing advice and not living up to it, I should put my thoughts down today.
Backstory
At the summer of this year (Philippine time -- April-Early June) I stopped my little "lifestyle change" (I hate the word diet). I just stopped trying, stopped being meticulous, just... stopped. Why? Because I've reached plateau. It was hard to see that around March, I wasn't losing weight anymore and my weight would play around 140 to 143. It sucked because I felt that I was exerting so much effort and nothing was happening. I used to lose weight a little quick and at the time I stopped, I did so because even in a month, I wouldn't lose any weight and I'd prolly gain a pound or two.
I gave up. I'm ashamed that I did but I won't lie about it. I slowly started eating more, not paying attention to what I eat anymore, etc. Lately, I thought I was in pretty good shape because things have been fitting better, I feel better and I've been eating what I want. I haven't checked the scale in over three or four months (?) because for some reason it got lost when we we did "spring cleaning" and I haven't seen it again until today.
I took a deep breath. Something told me to expect that I gained a few pounds BUT I didn't expect myself to gain so much.
From my epic win of getting to 140 from 161, I am now back to 147. I felt a little crushed. I knew there's no one else to blame but me. It's just so hard to diet when you have more free time to think and lately, when there's rarely any time to think and you stress eat.
But enough excuses. I have to go through what I have written. The phases in the journey of weight loss. And I know I can do this as I have Em and anyone who would go through this journey with us :) It's always easier having people to do it with, y'know?
So let's go through half of it first.
Phase 1: Know what you're doing this for.
Me? I wanna be healthy. I'm going to work in the medical field. I don't wanna preach things I don't follow. Right now, my family's getting their own wakeup calls and I'm glad that somehow everyone knows what to do now, that for quite a while now, we've just been eating too much and we're not moving enough :p I wanna be able to keep up with my clients when I start treating, you know? I wanna be able to move and not get tired too quick.
Phase 2: Assessment
Today I weighed myself. I am 147lbs and at the height of 5'2", I'm well overweight. My BMI? 26.9 UGH. To be normal, I have to be at 24.9 or 136 lbs. So I'm 11 lbs away from being of the borderline healthy weight :p Oh well. Have to face the facts :)
Phase 3: Planning
I know that this'll be slow so I might as well condition myself. By the end of August I hope to be at 144lbs. By the end of September, hopefully at 139lbs. By the end of November, hopefully at 135lbs. I'm taking it slow.
Things I have to remember:
- count your calories, Mara!
- You can only have half a cup of rice at every meal
- eat on a small plate
- drink loads of water
- find better snacks
- you MUST eat breakfast within an hour of you waking up
I guess that's it for now. With my month goal I have to lose three pounds in over two weeks. I know it's a small goal but believe me, it's better than waiting a month to lose one pound.
LET'SDOTHISYESI'MREADY
'Til the next stop,
Mara

Goal! In Favor of FTW!
Hey guys! Mara here. As you may know by now, initially, it was just about weight loss, but as the whole thing came together, there has been one most important aim -- to help people. That's my long term goal and I'm determined to make it happen.
I'd like to see myself answering questions/comments, making friends and learning from whoever stumbles on this blog as I hope they'd learn from me and Em.
Short term goals?
- Lose 20-30 lbs by the end of this year and finally reach my ideal weight (for health reasons, for myself, not for anyone else).
- Get better at eating healthy
- Develop my study habits.
- Develop my spending/saving habits.
- Get better at time management and balancing my life.
Well that's all I've got from the top of my head :p
What about you? :)
What are your long and short term goals?

Well you know what they say about making goals, to be able to reach them, they have to be S.M.A.R.T.
S-Specific
M-Measurable
A-Attainable
R-Realistic; and
T-Time-bound
Why specific? So you know where to go. If you don't know where to go, how would you make action to get there?
Why measurable? I think it's a motivation thing. If you can't measure how you're doing and you don't feel like you're making progress, you'll prolly get tired and give it all up!
Why attainable? You don't want to beat yourself up over something you can't have! You're better off pursuing things that would make you better and cause you less stress.
Why realistic? Similar reason as that of attainable. You can't force yourself to reach a point with impossible factors. Be reasonable with yourself. It'll make things easier.
Why time-bound? Know when to finish. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. You have to known when certain things have to be done!
What do you guys think?
Let me know!
'Til the next stop,
Mara
